Privacy policy
MarkMe is a safety check-in app. It holds information that matters: where you are going, when you expect to be back, and who should hear about it if you aren't. This page explains what we collect, why, who sees it, and how to remove it. MarkMe is operated by Crossfxn LLC ("we", "us").
The short version
- We collect what MarkMe needs to run your check-ins and reach your contacts, and nothing for advertising.
- Your location is shared only during a check-in or SOS, and only if you allow it. There is no background tracking.
- Your contacts hear from us only if you miss a check-in, send an SOS, or mark safe after an alert. Contacts get texts only after they reply YES.
- We don't sell your information, and we don't share it for advertising.
- You can ask us to delete your account and everything in it at any time.
MarkMe is not an emergency service
MarkMe does not call 911 or send anyone to you. It tells the people you chose. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.
What we collect
Your account
- Your email address, which you use to sign in.
- Your name, if you add one. Your contacts see it in alerts.
- Your mobile number, if you add one, and your time zone, so times in alerts are correct.
Your check-ins
- When you start a check-in, how long it runs, the note you add (for example, where you're going), and how it ended.
- SOS alerts you send.
- A history of each check-in: reminders, alerts sent, and when you marked safe.
Your location
On mobile, you can choose to share your location during a check-in or when you send an SOS. We keep the most recent location for that check-in so we can include it in an alert. We never collect location in the background or outside a check-in or SOS, and you can turn location off in your phone's settings at any time. Alerts include your location as a Google Maps link. Opening that link sends the coordinates to Google.
Your contacts
The people you add as contacts: their name, and their email address, mobile number, or both. For each mobile number, we record whether that person agreed to texts (by replying YES) or opted out (by replying STOP). If a contact also has a MarkMe account, we link the two so we can reach them by app notification.
Your devices
If you allow notifications in the mobile app, we store a push token for your device so we can send you reminders and alerts.
Technical information
Like any website or app, our servers and hosting providers receive technical information such as IP addresses, browser or device type, and request logs. We use it to keep MarkMe running, to prevent abuse, and to fix problems. We don't use advertising trackers or sell this information. Sign-in keeps you logged in with storage on your device, not advertising cookies.
The waitlist
If you joined the waitlist on markmeapp.com, we have your email address, whether you signed up as an individual or an organization, and your organization's name if you gave one. The signup form may use a Cloudflare bot check, which receives your IP address.
How we use it
- To run your check-ins: timing them, reminding you, and alerting your contacts when you miss one or send an SOS.
- To send sign-in codes and messages about your account.
- To ask your contacts, once, whether they agree to receive texts.
- To keep MarkMe reliable and secure, including limits that prevent misuse of text messaging.
- To answer you when you contact us.
- For the waitlist only: to tell you when MarkMe opens, or, for organizations, to follow up about a pilot.
We don't send marketing texts, and we don't use your information for advertising.
Who we share it with
The contacts you choose
When you miss a check-in or send an SOS, your contacts receive your name, your check-in note, when you were expected back, and your last shared location. If you then mark safe, they're told you're safe.
Service providers
We use these companies to run MarkMe. They process information only to provide their service to us.
- Supabase: database and sign-in, hosted in the United States.
- Render: servers that run the MarkMe app's backend.
- Cloudflare: website hosting, domain, and security.
- Twilio: text messages to contacts.
- Resend: email, including sign-in codes and alerts.
- Expo, Apple and Google: push notifications to phones.
When the law requires it
We may disclose information if we believe in good faith that the law requires it, or that it's necessary to protect someone from serious harm.
If MarkMe changes hands
If Crossfxn LLC or MarkMe is sold or merged, your information may transfer to the new owner, who must keep the promises in this policy.
Text messages
We don't sell or share your phone number or opt-in information with third parties for marketing. Contacts receive texts only after replying YES to our invite, and can reply STOP at any time. See our text message terms for who receives texts and how to opt out.
How long we keep it
- Your account, contacts and check-in history: while your account is open.
- Location from a check-in: removed 90 days after that check-in ends.
- When you delete your account: it's closed right away, and your information is permanently deleted within 30 days.
- Waitlist entries: until MarkMe opens to you, or until you ask us to remove them.
Copies may remain in encrypted backups for a short time until the backups are replaced.
Your choices
- Add or remove contacts at any time in the app.
- Turn off location or notifications in your phone's settings.
- Ask for a copy of your information, a correction, or deletion of your account by emailing [email protected] from your account's email address.
- If someone added you as a contact: reply STOP to any MarkMe text, or email us and we'll remove your details.
Security
Information is encrypted in transit and stored with providers that encrypt data at rest. Access is limited to the people and systems that need it to run MarkMe. No system is perfectly secure. If a breach affects your information, we'll tell you as the law requires.
Age
MarkMe is for adults 18 and over. It isn't meant for monitoring children, and we don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has an account, email us and we'll delete it.
Where we operate
MarkMe is available in the United States and Canada, and your information is stored and processed in the United States.
Changes
We'll update this page when our practices change and change the date at the top. If a change affects how we use information you've already given us, we'll email you before it takes effect.
